Selecting Church Leaders

Selecting Church Leaders

Jim Hester and the nominating committee have been working very hard over the past month. I want to thank everybody who submitted nominations this year. We have had many excellent candidates to discuss and consider.

The guiding questions the committee has been asking are:

  1. Are they in worship regularly?
  2. Are they involved in a small group or Sunday school class?
  3. Do they exhibit leadership ability?
  4. Do they support the church with time, talent, and treasure?

Leadership in a church like Woodmont is essential. We count on our leaders to take their role seriously and be ambassadors for the church in this community. We also count on them to prioritize spiritual growth in their personal lives. It’s not about being perfect because nobody is perfect. It’s about always working to go deeper in faith, build Christian character, and cultivate community. Having a servant’s heart is crucial!

Once the nominating committee is done meeting, they will pass a recommended slate onto the board. Once the board approves the slate at their March meeting, we will begin contacting the nominees, which usually occurs during the month of April. Final approval by the congregation happens in June after the names have been published. The new leadership class begins July 1, which is our fiscal year. Board members serve a two-year term. Elders and deacons serve a three-year term.

Jay Hutchens and I are leading a four-week Lenten class beginning on Wednesday, March 19, called “Spiritual Leadership for Anxious Times.” You can register for that class by clicking here. This class is a great way to grow, deepen leadership ability, become more self-aware, and connect with others. Leadership is a spiritual gift that must be cultivated and developed. The season of Lent is a perfect time to do that. Some other great classes are also being offered during Lent as well. Justin Gung will lead one as well as Vicki Askew and Hunter Mobley. Please keep the nominating committee in your prayers. This is a big task. They spend many hours at the church during this process. Thankfully, we continue to have excellent candidates to choose from. I hope our church never takes this for granted!
