My Upcoming Book – ”What the World Needs Now“

I am excited to announce my upcoming book that is being published by Abingdon Press in May titled What the World Needs Now: Virtue and Character in an Age of Chaos. This new book provides antidotes to many of the challenges that our culture is currently facing including loneliness, political polarization, rapid secularization, busyness, exhaustion, anger, outrage, division, declining moral leadership, and a loss of trust among people. My goal is to offer hope and solutions to these challenges and to talk about the timeless values that need to be passed down from generation to generation. What are the core values that we must teach our children and grandchildren as they grow up? What seems to be missing in our world right now? What role can we all play in making a difference in our own lives? How does Jesus provide the answers?

The chapters of the book focus on topics like virtue, resilience, emotional intelligence, truth, love, peace, connection, faith, leadership, civility, wisdom, healing, priorities, simplicity, meaning, and purpose. This book was written out of my own experiences as both a seasoned pastor, university professor, husband, and father. Moral formation is essential in this culture, and I have tried to provide helpful language and insight around many of these important issues. Writing a new book is no small task. I am grateful to the editors at Abingdon Press and to everybody who has helped me bring this book to fruition. It has certainly been an ongoing labor of love. The book is ideal for churches, small groups, university settings, leadership classes, and anybody who wrestles with these important topics. My solutions to these challenges come from my faith in Christ and my steadfast belief that the spiritual and emotional life take ongoing work. We all face significant challenges and deal with people daily that take us away from our spiritual center. The world does feel chaotic. Being human is indeed a challenge for us all. We all need encouragement along the way.

I will soon be announcing a book launch date here at Woodmont sometime in the middle of May. I plan to preach a sermon series after Easter where I will talk about many of these topics and how the answers are clearly found in scripture. In reality, I teach, preach, and write on these topics all the time because they are universal and we all wrestle with them. The good news is that we can all wrestle with them together. I am looking forward to the book’s release.
