Nashville and the world are still grieving the loss of Dolly Parton. She was born the fourth of twelve children in East Tennessee to a sharecropper and his wife. They lived in a shack with no electricity or running water. She went on to become a global icon.

Dolly was one of those people who was larger than life. She was a gifted songwriter, actress, and performer. She had an amazing spirit and charisma that radiated everywhere she went. She started Dollywood to provide jobs for people in East Tennessee, and over the years it has become a beloved place for many families, including our family.

One of her greatest legacies was her commitment to childhood literacy through the “Imagination Library,” which has provided books from birth for millions of Tennessee children over the years.

Dolly had a generous spirit, and she loved all kinds of people. You never heard anybody say anything bad about Dolly. Liberals, conservatives, Republicans, and Democrats – they all loved her. They have all been paying tribute to her over the past few weeks.

She made the world a better place. She was positive, hopeful, and genuine. She wasn’t divisive, and she is going to be greatly missed for so many reasons.

Here are some life lessons from this incredible lady:

  • Don’t let humble beginnings keep you from dreaming big. Dolly never forgot where she came from, and that gave her empathy for those who struggle in life. In America, you can always work your way up.
  • Keep faith at the core. Faith remained an essential aspect of Dolly’s life despite her fame and success.
  • Don’t take the bait from those who want to divide. Dolly was always careful when navigating political topics and answering political questions. She was a uniter.
  • Generosity is a way of life. It has been said that Dolly would have been a billionaire were it not for her ongoing generosity and philanthropy. She never stopped giving to others. We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.
  • Optimism and positivity are choices, and Dolly chose them her entire life. It spread to others around her and became contagious.
  • Dolly believed in loving all types of people because that’s what God wants. As it says in scripture, “Mortals look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Dolly saw through to the heart.
  • She believed that family is the greatest blessing in life. She loved her family. Dollywood became a place where families could go to make memories of a lifetime.
  • Life is not about gaining recognition. Multiple times, Dolly turned down awards and recognition. That was never her goal.
  • In a world full of narcissism and growing self-absorption, she put other people first. Dolly constantly did that through the choices she made.
  • Reading and education are essential to building a future. Dolly provided books to millions of children. She knew the importance of childhood literacy.
  • Dolly knew that character always matters and is built and sustained over time. People trusted her because she was consistent. Her words and actions aligned.
  • Dolly knew that faith and hope are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have one without the other.

We will all miss Dolly Parton. She is irreplaceable and leaves a massive void. But the many lessons she taught us remain and will make all of us better people!
